How to reach us

Find out the easiest way to get to the Biokovo Nature Park

Biokovo Nature Park lies in the southern part of Croatia (www.croatia.hr) in the Splitsko-dalmatinska County (www.dalmatia.hr), covering the area of 7 municipalities and two cities.

The main road entrance into the park is close to the city of Makarska (pop. 13,716), the centre of the Markarska Riviera, and you can reach it by car or bus.

The closest railway station is in Split (www.hzpp.hr), the closest airports are Split (Kaštela – Resnik, www.split-airport.hr) and Dubrovnik (Ćilipi, www.airport-dubrovnik.hr).

Split and Dubrovnik are also connected with Italy, by the Ancona-Split and the Bari-Dubrovnik shipping lines (www.jadrolinija.hr; www.elite.hr).

According to data supplied by the Croatian Auto Club (www.hak.hr), the road distances to Makarska from the major Croatian cities are:

Makarska - Zagreb

  • 480 km by motorway (exit Zagvozd)
  • 495 km by motorway (exit Dugopolje)
  • 410 km by the old road via Knin

Makarska - Osijek 454 km (via Bosnia-Herzegovina)
Makarska - Zagreb - Osijek 738 km
Makarska - Rijeka 372 km (via Sinj, Gračac, Senj)
Makarska - Zadar
186 km
Makarska - Šibenik
124 km
Makarska - Split
59 km

You can come to visit Biokovo Nature Park by car, minibus, motor cycle, bicycle or on foot.

You can get to the main road entrance into the park from the following directions:

  • Makarska – after the left turn off the Adriatic Highway (on the way out of the city) onto the Makarska – Vrgorac national road (6 km)
  • Dubrovnik – by the Adriatic Highway to the cross roads at the entry into Markarska, turning right onto the Makarska – Vrgorac national road (151 km) and
  • Vrgorac - along the Vrgorac – Makarska national road (35 km).

From the park’s reception entrance (at 365 m a.s.l.) to the highest peak of Biokovo – Sv. Jure (1762 m a.s.l.) one travels along the Biokovo Road, which is the highest road in the Republic of Croatia.
It is 23 km long, and since there is only one lane, with passing places (lay-bys) at about every 300 metres, and since it is a distinctly mountainous road, specific conditions of driving obtain, and drivers can drive on it exclusively on their own responsibility.

If you driving skills are not up to these conditions, we recommend visiting the park in a guided tour organised by travel agencies that have excursions in mini-buses.

If you decide to visit the park on foot, you have a choice from more than 40 hiking routes, which set off from either the maritime or the inland side, from the foothills to the peaks of Biokovo.

Just about 3 km before (or after, depending on the direction you are travelling) the main road entrance into the park is the turn-off for Kotišina – the village above which the Kotišina Biokovo Botanical Garden is sited; you can arrive here by car or on foot from Makarska, along the Put Makra street over the city produce market place to the viaduct, after which there is a crossing across the Adriatic Highway, below the viaduct, and then 500 more m along the highway to the large substation where a concreted path starts – for about 45 minutes.
